Alaskan Malamute ACTIVITIES

Confomation  | Sledding  | Skijoring  | Hiking/Packing

ACTIVITIES

Alaskan Malamutes are a very active breed. If they are not given something to do they can become very destructive to keep themselves occupied. There are many activities for Malamute owners to do with their pets. Some require a lot of expense, equipment, and physical activity. Other activities require less investment, less equipment and not as much physical activity.

SLEDDING

Sledding is hooking up 1 or more dogs - usually Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies or Alaskan Huskies - although other breeds are being used, to a sled or tobbogan. The dogs than pull a person on the sled through the snow. The most recognized form of dog sledding is the Iditarod.
Besides sledding there is another version refered to as carting. This is similar to sledding but is used in areas where snow is rare or non-existant.

SKIJORING

Skijoring is similar to sledding but more realistic for owners who have between 1-3 dogs. This method is done by hooking oneself on cross-country skis to the dogs. The main equipment for this activity is skis, a skijor belt, tuglines (for the dogs) and harnesses for each dog.

HIKING & PACKING

Hiking and Packing are very similar. The main difference is with packing the dog is carrying a pack on their back. Also, by packing with your dog you can earn titles to add to your dog.
